French Drains

A French drain is a great way to keep your home and foundation dry. This type of drainage system is installed on lower areas of the land where water tends to collect after light or heavy rain. Installing a French drain helps to redirect ground water around the house, avoiding higher levels of moisture on the soil and preventing foundation problems.

Different Types of French Drains

There are different types of French drains, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. We offer deep French drains and surface drains which are great for areas prone to flooding. They are installed deeper underground or at the surface, allowing for better protection from the elements. Our experts can help you decide which type of French drain is best for your home.

Surface Drain

These French drains are installed on the ground surface and consist of perforated pipes that collect water and channel it away from the property.

This type of drainage is the most commonly used in residential properties and is useful when the amount of water that collects is not great and there is a natural slope in the land that helps to drain the water.

The drain pipe is made of high-density polyethylene, is corrugated and perforated to a 4" diameter. 9" or 12" basins are installed every 10 feet along the drain in order to help collecting the water. It is normally installed about 8 to 18 inches deep.

Deep Drain

These types of drains are a combination of surface and blind French drains. They are installed underground with perforated tubes, but also have a grate on top to collect water on the surface.

Depending on the amount of water that collects in the area, more than one pipe may be used, as the diameter of the pipe will affect the amount of water that can flow.

The depth of this type of drain will vary depending on the natural grade of the ground, usually 3 to 4 feet, but can sometimes be deeper.

Since French or trench drains are primarily gravity operated, in some cases a sump pump may be required to drain the water if the slope is not sufficient or depending on the slope of the land.

Advantages Of French Drain Systems

1.

Help prevent foundation problems.

Ensuring proper drainage is one of the most important aspects of foundation maintenance. Since excessive moisture levels or standing water around the house is one of the main factors of foundation problems, a French drain could be the solution to collect and redirect water away from the house.

2.

Erosion control

Erosion can have a big impact as it removes the topsoil, this can also affect the foundation of your home. Loss of the protective soil around it can also result in the loss of structural support below the foundation, diminishing the structural integrity of your home.

3.

Adds value to your property

It's no secret that any home improvement adds value to your property. French drains effectively drain water from your property, preventing water damage and creating more usable space.
